Being a new mom has so many ups and downs. For first time moms, this is unchartered territory and the learning curve can be very interesting. Amongst all of these new challenges, there is the underlying thought of getting your pre- pregnancy body back.
Of course, media doesn’t help with this, and we often feel that we have to immediately start trying to lose our “baby” weight. This is obviously unrealistic, but while nursing, many find that the weight will come off without really trying because we are using so many calories to produce milk.
To help with the process, here are a few things to keep in mind. This was especially true for me, but sometimes, with the hustle and bustle of it all, we forget to eat! Try to set an eating schedule up with snacks included. This will keep your body satisfied through the day and meals will be kept at regular portions. It also helps to have snacks readily available to “grab and go”. A little bit of planning can be a life saver!
If friends offer to help you and bring meals, kindly suggest a healthier option, such as zucchini lasagna, shepard’s cauliflower pie, etc.
Many moms are worried about milk production, and start looking into lactation stimulating foods. The most recent one that I have seen is Lactation Cookies. While they can help milk production, there are other choices available that do not contain so many calories.
Above all, allow yourself to take time. Enjoy all of the time that you can with your new family. Know that every pregnancy is different and try not to compare yourself to others – this can be a recipe for disaster. Your body went through an incredible journey – enjoy the ride!
