What is the Paleo diet and is it right for you?

Dr. Bret and I attended a very interesting seminar which was entitled “Holistic Heart Health”. The speaker was Dr. Jack Wolfson, who is a cardiologist. He spoke about how he followed in his father’s footprints to becoming a cardiologist, but after meeting his wife, who is a chiropractor, he began to look at things differently and began a Holistic Heart practice. This focuses on preventative heart health as opposed to reactive, which is the route most cardiologists follow.

He pulled up studies that clearly show the ineffectiveness of statin drugs at preventing heart attacks, and that cholesterol is not our enemy, but rather, a necessity for proper function in our bodies.
There are so many misconceptions about fat, but the reality is that processed foods with saturated fat is our real enemy. If society as a whole were to ditch the processed garbage and begin eating fruits, vegetables and meats, our health would improve greatly.

That’s where the paleo diet comes in. The paleo diet basically states that we should be eating what our ancestors found and ate – vegetables, meats, healthy fats and nuts.

Many people believe that the paleo diet is about eating all of the meat you want, with no grains or dairy. While the grains and dairy elimination is correct, it is actually vegetable intake that so many of us lack, but is important with the paleo diet.

Our current food pyramid is inaccurate. Grains and dairy do not provide any nutritional benefit that you cannot get from meats and vegetables. They do contribute to a large amount of allergies that we see including gluten, yeast, and dairy. I’m sure more of you are aware of this, but we are the only mammal that drinks another mammals milk – the only one! Don’t get me wrong, I love milk and grew up with it. What I am saying is that we don’t need it.
